STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (WTAJ) — In the works since 2015, State College’s Town Centre Development project is finally breaking ground in the now-closed Allen St. Lot.

The plan is to build a 160-key hotel along with a new food hall. The project is taking over the former Verizon building at 224 S. Allen St., the former Allen St. Lot and the back of the Jeramar Plaza building. At this time, no other sites have been included in the plans.

Starting May 13, the borough permanently closed the Allen St. Lot for this project. Construction teams are now working to get electricity up and running for the new building.

The borough believes these new additions will help benefit current residents and tourists alike.

“There’s been, I think, a priority to get some kinds of hospitality or other restaurants that would maybe cater to an older crowd or a non-student crowd,” Ed LeClear, planning director of State College, said.

While no definitive timeline has been given for the completion of the project, LeClear said he is happy to see “ground getting broken” at the former Allen St. Lot.
