MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va. (WTRF) — A local landmark and its volunteers are working continuously to preserve much of the history of the building while also ensuring that it is still functional.

The Strand Theatre in Moundsville was built in 1920. Since then, there have been several things throughout the theatre that have needed attention.

The Theatre recently received a $29,000 grant from the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture, and History to replace the rigging system that sits above the stage.

The theatre operates strictly with the help of its volunteers, and one of them says it has been great to be able to keep much of the theatre’s original structure.

”You want to maintain the integrity of this beautiful theater. And we have been very fortunate, I think, to do that well. If you look around this theater, you will see it has a lot of the original workings around the theater. You have not only just with the visuals, but there are still some main support structure areas that have not been touched and are perfectly sound. So it was well built when it was done.”

Joan Palmer – Treasurer, Strand Theatre Preservation Society

The theatre remains open for various events, programs, and private rentals. For upcoming events and programs at the theatre, you can visit their website https://www.strandtheatrewv.com/ .
