VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — It’s been a busy few months at the Vincennes Animal Shelter.

Director Leah Reagan said with all the animals coming from outside city limits, the shelter has been at capacity for much of 2024.

“We’ve taken in about 50 dogs from out in the county just since the first of the year, so we just stay full and more dogs means more care,” she said.

Now, help is on the way.

The Vincennes City Council voted to add a new full-time position for the organization, and funding was made possible by an agreement between the city and Knox County.

Back in December, the city’s board of works increased the fee for out-of-limits animals from $100 to $250. Reagan said the decision was made out of necessity given the number of animals they’ve been taking in.

Brian Grove, the Vincennes Council President, said these extra dollars helped make this new position a reality.

“Working with Knox County, they have no place for their animals to go, so we always did pick up their animals,” he said. ”We increased the fee, it went up to $250. There’s a lot of animals that come up through the county,  so that’s enabled us to fund this new full-time position.

Reagan is excited to have more support on a day-to-day basis.

“It’s very much a relief to finally have another full-time position. I feel like we wear many hats out here and we have a lot of things to do,” Reagan said. “It’s definitely been a need I’ve been pointing out for quite some time.”

The position could be filled as soon as this week.
