VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — With the school year coming to a close, two local universities held their commencement ceremonies.

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and Indiana State University had its respective ceremonies Saturday morning, and they hold a special meaning for the class of 2024. Many of these graduates had their high school graduation cancelled due to the pandemic. Saint Mary-of-the-Woods interim president Brennan Randolph felt the anticipation.

“I think it’s going to be memorable,” he said. “Being able to participate in a ceremony today is something that they will never forget. Being able to have that experience as they finish their college degree is impactful for families and the graduate themselves so I think it’s going to be a very special day.”

Families were eager for the moment as well, but some were busier than others. The Rubinacci family had twin brothers graduating today, one from each school. Their father Victor noted the importance of the moment.

“Not only did our children get robbed of graduation in 2020, we got robbed of that experience as well,” he said. “They received their diploma in front of a sign with just us and the principal, now they are actually going to get to experience their graduation.”

There is no question that this day meant so much to everyone involved. The faculty, graduates, and families will remember 2024 commencement for a long time.
