SULLIVAN COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Many local animal shelters are currently overwhelmed with large numbers of dogs and cats, but they hope an upcoming event will help these animals find their forever homes.

The Humane Society of Sullivan County is holding the first-ever Southwest Indiana Mega Adoption Event on June 1 at the Sullivan County 4-H Building.

The event will feature over 250 dogs and cats from at least eight animal shelters and rescues from around the area.

Julie Tow, the Board President of the Humane Society of Sullivan County, explains why it’s important to get as many animals adopted as possible.

“When shelters become overwhelmed, that means that you have too many animals within your facility,” Tow said. “That could cause disease or illnesses to spread and it also is very wearing on the staff taking care of the animals day after day, and it’s very costly.”

The event will start at 10 a.m. and Tow says it will continue until attendance slows down.

Pet adoption fees at the event will be $50 for dogs and $25 for cats.
