WASHINGTON, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Washington Hatchets football team enters week 3 of the high school football season at 2-0 for the first time since 2010.

Head Coach Joe Morris is in his 5th year with the Hatchets and says it’s the first time he’s seen his team play truly great football in his tenure.

“Now you’re starting to see the benefits of the work put in during the offseason and player led leadership, a player led team and that’s why I think we’re going to have success this year,’ Morris says, “We’re finally reaching the point where we’re playing great level football.”

The Hatchets have a total of 28 juniors and seniors on this year’s team and the leaders on this team are excited not just about having success this season but also about building a winning culture on the gridiron for Washington.

“We’ve been waiting for this year for a long time, we’ve got a lot of juniors and seniors and we’re just taking advantage of what we got,” Senior quarterback and captain Colton Stowers says, “The history hasn’t been good here and we’re trying to change that and we’re trying to build a reputation for us and build for the future.”

Now, the Hatchets look toward another big goal in their first season in 4A, their first winning season since 2016.

“For us, our expectations are much bigger than anybody might anticipate at Washington, Morris says, “Each week that you get better the target gets bigger on your back and so our kids are going to have to learn to fight through that and we’ll learn a lot about who they are as we go week to week.”

Washington hosts North Knox on Friday; we will have highlights at 11 on WTWO’s Goin’ 2 the Endzone.
