Fire dangers ahead of dry weather

BEAVER, WV (WVNS) — With dry weather predicted and little in the way of rain, the risks of fires are real on Monday, August 19, 2024.

Taste of fall: Cooler afternoons and cold nights ahead!

Small fires can easily be swept up into raging brushfires and can be caused by the most minor of actions.

Not putting out your fire pit completely, a stray spark from an ATV, or even tossing out a still lit cigarette butt from your car window can cause fire departments to be called out to conquer a large blaze.

Will Davis, Public Information Officer with Beaver Volunteer Fire Department, said to consider what might be a risk.

“So, we need to be really careful. If we’re towing a vehicle, make sure that the chains on our trailer are nice and tight, they’re not creating sparks on the ground, that the wheel bearings are greased so that we’re not causing sparks that might start a fire along a median or side of the roadway.” said Davis.

Davis said these are things people do not usually consider when thinking about accidental fires.

He advises families taking advantage of the cooler nightly temperatures with a fire pit to douse their fires, stir the ashes, then douse them again.

A fire is not completely out until it is cold.
