BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — Raleigh County Commission officials were preparing on Monday, August 19, 2024 to accept 146 acres from the City of Beckley.

Greenbrier Hotel employees sent letter laying out potential loss of health insurance

The acreage is in Pinecrest Industrial Park. Much of the park needs infrastructure, and county officials said they have planned for weeks to take it over and develop it.

“There was a couple of things that held it up last month,” said Raleigh County Commission President Greg Duckworth. “We’re told that August 27th may be the day the City Council meets.”

At-Large Beckley Common Councilman Cody Reedy said the City of Beckley also owns a single piece of property that is situated in the Pinecrest Industrial Park. He said that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is trading a piece of property the federal agency owns near Beckley Little League to the city in exchange for the lot at Pinecrest Industrial Park.

The lot will be used for a long-awaited veterans’ nursing home, according to Reedy.

Reedy said that county officials wanted the transfer to be completed prior to the transfer of the remaining 146 acres to Raleigh County Commission, which Council members are set to do on August 27, 2024 during the regular meeting.

“My understanding is [that] they had already entered the deal with the VA, but they hadn’t completed the deed work yet,” added Duckworth. “They’re completing the deed work with the VA Hospital before they do the transfer with the County Commission.”

Engineering plans are needed on the property being transferred to the county. Duckworth and Reedy said Council members will also vote on those engineering plans on August 27, 2024.

They said the transfer could be completed as early as October 1, 2024.
