GHENT, WV (WVNS) – Labor Day is a great weekend for people to get out of the house and enjoy some time away from work.

AAA Bluegrass Public Affairs Manager, Lori Weaver Hawkins told 59News on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 that Labor Day weekend is going to be busy on the roadways. She estimated that travel will be up about 9% around the country.

Weaver Hawkins also explained that there might be a benefit for those travelling by car.

“The other bit of good news is that gas prices are considerably lower than they were last year this weekend. Today in West Virginia, we’re looking at about $3.29 and last year at this time, we were at $3.66,” said Weaver Hawkins.

Weaver Hawkins explained Labor Day marks the end of the summer travel season, as well as the 100 deadliest days of summer.

She urged drivers to refrain from impaired driving, whether that be due to alcohol consumption or medications that may cause drowsiness.

Weaver Hawkins also recommended drivers to get up early when they plan to travel to better navigate busy roadways.
