Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office warns community about scam calls

RALEIGH COUNTY, WV (WVNS) — The Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office warned residents about the reappearance of a phone scam.

According to a Facebook post made by the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office, scam calls are going around the community once again where the scammers claim to be from the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office.

The Facebook post from the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office stated that the messages the scam callers leave state that the person missed Jury Duty and as a result, a subpoena was issued for their arrest.

The Raleigh County Sherriff’s Office also stated that in the messages, the scammers tell people that they will be arrested if they go to the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office, the scammers used social media, news articles, and more to find names of deputies with the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office, and that the calls appear to come from the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office due to the scammers using an app, to make the calls appear more realistic.

The Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office stated that they do not collect fines or money from people, and that members of the community should not give out any information and hang up as soon as possible if they get a from a person who claims to be a member of the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office and asks for money.

According to the post on the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, if a person receives a call and is worried about if the call is real, they can go to Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office law enforcement headquarters at 308 Ned Payne Drive in Beckley, or call the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office at 304-255-9300.
