ROYAL OAK (WWJ) -- It's been more than two years in the making. The Detroit Zoo on Tuesday unveiled its new logo, which will adorn the landmark water tower seen by tens of thousands of people daily, off I-696.

There is one very big and noticeable difference in the design.

"It is saying the 'Detroit Zoo' now, which is exciting," Robin Hamilton, Chief Experience Officer for the Detroit Zoological Society, told WWJ's Mike Campbell.

"So, what it has though is animals are peeking through the Os, and really those Os are acting as a portal to invite you into that adventure. Now you're not just watching, for example, the animal parade that used to be up there before. But now it's evolved into you being part of that story, being invited to that adventure, seeing through the eyes of the animal."

So far, the new design is getting rave reviews from visitors.

"I think everybody's going to love the colors, and the pop of the animals, et cetera," said Carol Bresnay of Detroit.

"It's cool," said Joey Hicks, age 6, who was visiting the zoo with his dad.

What does he like about it?

    "The snake!"

The new logo, on display on a mini water tower for now, will be wrapped around the Royal Oak water tower in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, the zoo is offering a new logo "photo op" — a sign right in front of the entrance where visitors can sit down and have their pictures taken with the logo.
