ALBION (WWJ) — A man is in custody after allegedly tying his girlfriend up and beating her in the basement of his home in Albion.

Around 4:40 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 4, officers were called to Dalrymple Street on reports of a domestic violence incident, according to the Albion Department of Public Safety.

When officers showed up they found a woman who had run to a neighbor’s house in search of help. She told police she had been tied up and beaten by a man who she had been in a relationship with.

The abuse had started late Saturday night and continued until she was able to escape the following afternoon, the department said.

The woman was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, including bruising and cuts on most of her body and face, as well as possible broken bones, according to the department.

The neighbor told officers he saw the suspect assault the woman near his house. As the suspect started dragging the woman away, he pulled out his gun, pointed it at the suspect and told him to let her go, officials said. The suspect then ran from the area.

The neighbor then called police to get the woman help. Officers were told there may also be children in the home’s basement.

When officers showed up they found two kids, ages 9 and 11. The children were turned over to relatives at the scene, according to police. Officials did not say whether the kids had been tied up in the basement or if they were injured.

Officers eventually found the suspect at a home on Dalrymple around 5 p.m. Monday and he was taken into custody without incident.

The suspect’s name has not been released and authorities have not released any information about what charges he may face.
