STURBRIDGE, Mass. (WWLP) – The Sturbridge Health Department is advising residents to avoid contact with Cedar Lake after a possible bloom of cyanobacteria algae.

Are COVID-19 cases still on the rise in Massachusetts?

Sturbridge Police Chief Dessert said that the recreation site has been closed until further notice. The town beach is located at 60 Cedar Street in Sturbridge and includes basketball, pickleball, and tennis courts. It is recommended that contact with the water be avoided at this time.

Contact with cyanobacteria algae can cause skin or eye irritation. Ingesting a small amount of the algae can cause gastrointestinal symptoms while ingesting a larger amount can cause liver or neurological damage. Children and pets are more susceptible to the effects.
