CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – With the long Labor Day weekend approaching, gas prices are dropping. Many Americans are planning to take advantage of the opportunity. 22News has the latest on what travelers should know before embarking on their vacations.

It’s going to be cheaper for drivers this Labor Day weekend. The National average gas price is almost 50 cents lower than it was last year.

“The lower gas prices do seem to be helping,” said Jack Soraghan of Salisbury.

“If your planning a long trip it’s great beacause it saves you,” added Andy Cordero of Woburn.

Many travelers excited to see relief at the pump. AAA Northeast Director, Jillian Young explains why gas prices are dropping so rapidly.

“While it was expected to be a very active hurricane season we have not had storm thats impacted refinery significantly so that has helped keep gas prices where they are,” explained Young.

And with lower gas prices means more people will be hitting the roads, experts say you should plan your trip strategically. According to AAA, the roads are expected to be most congested Thursday and Friday afternoon and evening, especially with the influx of college students moving back onto campus.

“We want to avoid the traffic, lots of traffic is going to be coming because of Labor Day,” said Lisa Damiano of New York.

Lisa has already left early for her Labor Day Weekend getaway. “I am going to camping and have some parties with friends,” she said.

If you haven’t left for your getaway yet, AAA recommends traveling before 11 am on Thursday, either before noon or after 7pm on Friday, and at noon on Saturday.

“It’s a good time to do some regular car maintence, get your car checked, especially if you havent in a long time that’s just going to make sure if you are in traffic this weekend you don’t have a car issue,” said Damiano.

Roads that are usually congested during travel times include the Mass Pike, I-495, and 295.
