Suffolk County officials demonstrating dangers of fireworks ahead of July 4th holiday
As many get set to celebrate for the Fourth of July, New York officials are reminding residents of the dangers of fireworks ahead of holiday gatherings.Suffolk County leaders will demonstrate what can go wrong when fireworks are used without professional supervision on Monday. Auto Body Shop and Furniture Business Owners Each Pleaded Guilty to Stealing New York State Taxes After Failing to Report Taxable Sales. Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced on July 2 that Brian Soltan, 62, of West Islip, owner of several East Islip auto body businesses, and Gerald McCrystal, 51, of Dix Hills, owner of Farmingdale-based furniture stores, were each sentenced after pleading guilty to grand larceny on separate cases for stealing sales tax money from New York State.

Leave it to the pros: Suffolk officials warn against danger of illegal fireworks
Fourth of July is coming up and officials are warning residents about the dangers of illegal fireworks. County Executive Ed Romaine called a press conference yesterday at the Suffolk County Fire Academy in Yaphank to remind residents that fireworks are illegal to purchase or use because they are inherently dangerous products. Illegal fireworks cause numerous injuries every year and even fatalities — on average, one death in Suffolk County every five years, Romaine said.

Emergency well repairs underway in Riverhead Water District, conservation measures urged
The Riverhead Water District is making emergency repairs to a major supply well after a structural failure put it out of commission on June 19. The well at the water district’s plant four on Osborn Avenue can produce 1.5 million gallons per day, Riverhead Water District Superintendent Frank Mancini said Friday. Losing its pumping capacity at the outset of summer in a district that typically comes close to pumping at maximum capacity during hot, dry spells can be very bad news, he said.

Long Island congressmen and most other members of the New York delegation have taken advantage of the taxpayer-funded reimbursements for lodging and meals under a new policy that does not require receipts to verify costs, a Newsday analysis found. Tom Brune reports on NEWSDAY.com that the policy for the first time allows House members, who are paid $174,000 a year, to get reimbursed for housing and food expenses when the House is in session and during committee work in an attempt to ease the costs of maintaining their homes in their districts and in Washington.
