    Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson.

Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard is exercising patience with second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson.

"Look, there are going to be some roller-coaster moments," Ballard said of Richardson on Wednesday via Michael Marot of the Associated Press. "Most quarterbacks, when they're young, they go through those moments, but you have to learn from them, grow from them, and keep moving forward. Just look around the league, and it's a little bit up and down."

Richardson, 22, lacks experience. The fourth overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft started in four games during his rookie season before suffering a season-ending AC joint injury in his right shoulder. Per NFL.com's Kevin Patra , Richardson started in 13 games in three seasons at Florida.

However, he has intriguing tools. Listed at 6-foot-5, 244 pounds, Richardson ran a 4.43 40-yard dash at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine and set a record for QBs in the vertical jump (40.5 inches).

On a July episode of "The Jim Rome Show," Nate Tice of Yahoo Sports tabbed Richardson as a dark-horse MVP candidate, pointing out how Colts head coach Shane Steichen should maximize his passing and running ability.

It may be time to lower expectations for Richardson after he had an up-and-down preseason. He completed 55.6% of his passes for 111 yards, one touchdown and one pick-six. He also fumbled once, but the Colts recovered it.

If Richardson fulfills his potential in 2024, the Colts could vie for an AFC South title. Their roster includes talented playmakers, such as running back Jonathan Taylor and wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr.

He may need time to fine-tune his game, though, explaining why Ballard isn't putting more pressure on him.
