MADERA, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – A 16-year-old was arrested and charged in connection with the stabbing death of a 13-year-old in Madera on July 6, the Madera Police Department announced Thursday.

Officers say on July 6 a fight broke out outside of a quinceañera at a residence near Sonora Street and Sherwood Way.

According to police, just before midnight, a 13-year-old and a 15-year-old boy were stabbed, and a third teen was hit in the head with a blunt object. The 13-year-old succumbed to his injuries after being transported to the hospital. He has since been identified as 13-year-old Jacob Munoz.

Officers say a 16-year-old suspect was taken into custody two days later after being identified as a person of interest. He was initially arrested on charges unrelated to the homicide. After reviewing evidence, detectives say they were able to link the suspect to the crime. The 16-year-old was charged with the July 6 homicide this week.

Detectives say they are continuing to investigate the case, and urge anyone with information regarding the incident to contact the Madera Police Department at (559) 675-4220.
