The Indianapolis Colts signed a former Super Bowl champion defensive back with experience as a starter

Indianapolis Colts fans dont have to flood the comments on their most recent roster move asking, "Can he play CB?" because the answer is yes.

After hosting him and eight other players for a visit, the Colts announced that they signed veteran cornerback David Long Jr. to their practice squad.

    David Long Jr.

The Los Angeles Rams drafted CB David Long with the 79th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He spent the first four years of his NFL career with the Rams, and he appeared in 52 games and made 10 starts. His biggest role with the team came in 2021 with him starting five games (career high) and logging 516 total snaps defensive snaps (career high), which led him to set new career highs across the board with an interception, five pass deflections, and 40 total tackles.

To top off his career year in 2021, the Rams won Super Bowl LVI over the Cincinnati Bengals. Long finished out his rookie contract with the Rams, and following the 2022 season, he moved on elsewhere. Last season was a strange one for Long as he would go on to suit up for three different teams: Las Vegas Raiders, Carolina Panthers, and Green Bay Packers. He's hoping for more stability this season, and with the Colt's CB room being so thin, I have a gut feeling he won't stay on their practice squad for very long.

He has the size to play in the slot or on the outside: 5-foot-11, 196 pounds. He also hasn't had a large special teams role since his first two seasons in the NFL. So it's safe to say the Colts likely view him as an actual rotational CB and not a primarily special teamer, which their new addition, Samuel Womack III, is expected to be. If Long can get a good grasp on the Colts' defense, I wouldn't be shocked to see him be one of the team's two practice squad elevations this week for their season opener against the Houston Texans. Because the Colts desperately need serviceable reserve CBs behind starters Juju Brents, Jaylon Jones, and Kenny Moore III.
