Georgia Bulldogs proving their skill position talent is much deeper than Kirby Smart thought

Back in August during fall training camp, head coach Kirby Smart noted that Georgia had some depth issues.

“I feel like we’ve got less depth than we’ve ever had,” Smart said on Aug. 14. “That’s kind of a common theme talking to other coaches I talk to. I call it the deterioration of football because every year we’ve been here, I feel like we’ve had more players capable of going in and playing winning football. Every year that goes down and we’ve got to keep working to increase that number.”

However, Saturday's win over Tennessee Tech showed that's not the case for their skill position group.

In the first quarter alone, quarterback Carson Beck targeted seven different receivers: Arian Smith, Dillon Bell, Branson Robinson, Oscar Delp, Dominic Lovet, Colbie Young and Trevor Etienne.

Beck finished the half throwing passes to a total of eight receivers after third-string tight end Lawson Luckie was added to the mix.

Of those eight receivers, five hauled in touchdown passes from Beck, including a 37-yarder to Luckie that helped Beck tie Georgia's single-game record for most passing touchdowns.

By the end of the game, over than a dozen different receivers were targeted.

Beck left the game with just over 11 minutes remaining in the third quarter, finishing the day completing 18 of 25 passes for 242 yards and five scores.

Gunner Stockton took the Bulldogs home the rest of the way, looking like the future quarterback Georgia will be able to rely on once Carson Beck heads to the NFL next spring.

Georgia now wins their 40th consecutive regular season game and looks deeper at the skill position groups than anyone could possibly have hoped for heading into their toughest schedule in recent memory. Most weeks the Bulldogs won't distribute the ball to over a dozen receiving options, but it's good to know that Georgia's elite level talent and depth hasn't gone anywhere.
