LEBANON COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) – Dozens of veterans, family and community members gathered at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery for the 42 nd annual Memorial Day ceremony.

The cemetery is the final resting place for more than 66,000 veterans and family members.

“No matter where their battlefield was in the mountains of Afghanistan, deserts of Iraq or Syria, skies over Europe, islands of the Pacific, frozen terrain of Korea, jungles of Vietnam or elsewhere. The stories of the fallen matter and need to be told,” said IGNC director John Spruyt.

Why are flags at half-staff in Pennsylvania?

    And by sharing their stories.

“We keep their memories alive and give others a glimpse of military service that aims to inspire them to create a better world,” said Spruyt.

While we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. We must remember those who remain unaccounted for.

“Across the globe, there are graves marked as unknown and loved ones waiting for answers,” said Chief of Strategic Communications Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, Ashley Wright.

Wright says nearly 81,000 U.S. personnel from World War II remain missing.

“Among these we access roughly 38,000 are possibly recoverable,” said Wright.

In 2023, Wright says they account for 158 Department of Defense personnel.
