ABINGDON — An investigation is continuing after a blaze caused an estimated $50,000 in damage to a mobile home in Abingdon, prompting a local organization to provide assistance to the five occupants, according to the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal.

The occupants called 911 at 8:32 a.m. Monday after discovering the fire at their residence in the 4000 block of Sharilynn Drive in the Beechwood Mobile Home Park, spurring area volunteer fire companies to respond, fire officials said. Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company served as the on-scene command unit, fire officials added.

Approximately 30 volunteer firefighters battled the blaze for about 10 minutes before bringing it under control, fire officials reported.

“The occupants woke up to heavy smoke and discovered a fire in the area of the utility room. Five residents, including three adults and two children, were able to escape. Firefighters were able to contain the bulk of the fire to the utility room and a bathroom,” an MOSFM spokesperson outlined.

The blaze caused an estimated $25,000 in structural damage to the one-story house and it destroyed approximately $25,000 in belongings inside the dwelling, according to the spokesperson, who further reported that no one was injured and that the smoke detectors activated. The Harford County Disaster Assistance is assisting the family, according to the spokesperson.

During their on-scene investigation, MOSFM detectives concluded that the blaze started inside a utility room, fire officials said. As of Tuesday, however, the cause of the fire remained under investigation, fire officials added.
