ANTIGO — City officials are seeking to fill a vacant city council seat following the resignation of alderperson Sandy Fischer.

Fischer, who represented Antigo’s Second Ward since 2017, officially resigned from her position April 18 due to health issues.

“I feel bad about having to leave early — I do care about this city,” said Fischer. She went on to compliment Brenda Sue Mayr, Langlade County’s new register of deeds, a position Fischer held for over 40 years. “I’m really proud of the new register of deeds — I think she’s doing a marvelous job.”

Kaye Matucheski, the city’s clerk and treasurer for over 27 years, said council members resigning in the middle of their terms is relatively rare.

“City council members have resigned for health reasons, family reasons, moving out of town, moving out of their ward,” she said. “But it hasn’t happened for quite a while.”

Anyone eligible to vote who resides in Ward 2, which consists of much of the city’s north side commercial district, is eligible to apply to temporarily fill Fischer’s seat until her term expires in April 2025.

“They would just have to turn in a letter of interest to my office. It should include information about themselves and why they want the position,” Matucheski said.

“The deadline is June 5 and they’ll consider it at the June 12 council meeting. Then at the June 12 city council meeting, it will be on the agenda, and the council will ask anyone that’s interested to give a little presentation on themselves.”

Following the presentations, the eight current city council members will vote on which candidate should fill the position.

For more information on the vacant second ward city council position, contact Matucheski at 715-623-3633 ext. 100 or kmatucheski@antigo-city.org.
