The Washington Commanders kicked off their 2024 preseason with a challenging matchup against the New York Jets , offering a crucial evaluation of the defense under new head coach Dan Quinn. While the game ended in a loss, it provided valuable insights into who might secure a spot on the 53-man roster.

Defensive End K.J. Henry , a fifth-round pick, continued to build on his strong finish to the 2023 season. He stood out in the Commanders’ defensive rotation, especially against the run, where he displayed improved anticipation and edge-setting. A key highlight was his tackle for loss, which halted a Jets drive. Henry’s ability to generate pressure suggests he could be a significant contributor to Washington’s defensive line this season.

Undrafted safety Tyler Owens strengthened his case for a roster spot with a solid performance. Owens made a notable impact on special teams, delivering a hard hit that stopped a punt returner in his tracks. His size, speed, and physicality align with what head coach Dan Quinn seeks in a defensive back, and his performance may have moved him closer to securing a spot on the final roster.

Cornerback Emmanuel Forbes Jr., the Commanders’ first-round pick in 2023, faced a tough night. After struggling in joint practices with the Jets, Forbes needed to bounce back but continued to show inconsistency. Despite an early pass breakup, a lapse in coverage allowed a 12-yard touchdown by Jets receiver Jason Brownlee . Forbes’ struggles with focus and consistency have raised concerns about his readiness for a starting role, and he will need to show significant improvement as the preseason progresses.

As the Commanders prepare for the regular season, these defensive performances will be closely watched by the coaching staff, with players like K.J. Henry and Tyler Owens looking to solidify their roles, while Emmanuel Forbes works to meet expectations.
