Commanders’ Offense: Grades vs. Jets

The Washington Commanders kicked off their 2024 preseason with a matchup against the New York Jets , offering a critical opportunity to evaluate the team’s offensive unit under new head coach Dan Quinn. With several key veterans sitting out, the game allowed younger players and new additions to showcase their skills in live action. Some players took full advantage of the spotlight, while others struggled, raising questions about their roles moving forward.
Rookie tight end Ben Sinnott emerged as a bright spot for the Commanders, showcasing the potential that made him a highly regarded second-round pick. Sinnott demonstrated his well-rounded skill set, excelling in blocking while also showing impressive body control, reliable hands, and the ability to generate yards after the catch. He finished the game as the team’s leading receiver, hauling in all three of his targets for 57 yards. Sinnott’s performance in this small sample size highlighted his potential to become a significant upgrade at the tight end position, and learning under veteran Zach Ertz will only accelerate his development.
Jayden Daniels , the Commanders’ rookie quarterback and No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, delivered a promising performance in his NFL debut. Daniels, wearing a retro jersey in homage to Doug Williams, started the game with some jitters, missing an easy pass to running back Austin Ekeler. However, he quickly settled in, showcasing his arm strength and accuracy with a deep pass to wide receiver Dyami Brown for a significant gain. Daniels capped off his first NFL drive with a rushing touchdown on a zone-read option, solidifying his status as the potential franchise quarterback the Commanders have long sought.
Veteran kicker Riley Patterson , brought in to compete for the starting job, struggled in the preseason opener. Patterson missed his only field goal attempt in perfect weather conditions, while his competitor, Ramiz Ahmed, converted his 40-yard attempt. With the Commanders holding the No. 2 waiver wire priority, it’s possible that the team’s Week 1 kicker isn’t on the roster yet, and Patterson’s performance didn’t do much to secure his place.
Second-year running back Chris Rodriguez Jr . faced a challenging night, failing to gain positive yardage on six carries and missing his only target in the passing game. In contrast, Michael Wiley, another contender for the No. 3 running back spot, performed well, gaining 34 yards and scoring a touchdown. Rodriguez’s struggles have put him in a precarious position as he fights to secure his spot on the 53-man roster, with time running out to prove his worth.
As the Commanders continue their preseason journey, these offensive performances will be critical in shaping the final roster and preparing the team for the regular season.
