As the Washington Commanders prepare for the 2024 NFL season, the spotlight is on wide receiver Jahan Dotson , whose starting position is increasingly at risk.

The Commanders, a team in transition under head coach Dan Quinn , are focused on surrounding their rookie quarterback, Jayden Daniels, with the best possible talent to ensure his success. This has led to heightened scrutiny of Dotson’s performance as the team evaluates its roster ahead of the season opener.

Dotson, selected 16th overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, has yet to live up to the expectations of a first-round pick. Over 29 career games, he has recorded 1,041 yards and 11 touchdowns on 84 receptions, averaging just 35.9 yards per game. These numbers have not been enough to secure his position, especially as competition within the wide receiver group intensifies.

In the Commanders' recent preseason game against the New York Jets , Dotson played 32 snaps—significantly more than established starters Terry McLaurin and Olamide Zaccheaus, who logged 11 and 10 snaps, respectively. This extended playing time suggests that Dotson’s role is far from secure.

Quinn acknowledged the fluidity of the receiver hierarchy, noting the ongoing competition for starting positions.

“We’re right in the middle of that competition at receiver and trying to find out slot and inside and outside, so moving guys into different locations,” Quinn said .

Dotson’s lackluster performance against the Jets, where he caught only two passes for 13 yards, further complicates his situation. The Commanders have also brought in veteran receiver Martavis Bryant , signaling a potential shakeup in the receiver corps. Bryant, who hasn’t played since 2018, adds another layer of competition for Dotson as he enters a critical third season—a pivotal time for young players to prove their worth.

As the preseason continues, Dotson must elevate his game to secure his place on the Commanders' roster. With players like Jamison Crowder and Mitchell Tinsley also vying for snaps, Dotson faces a make-or-break moment in his career. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether he can reclaim his starting role or if the Commanders will move forward with other options.
