Bucs vs. Jags Joint Practice: Baker Mayfield, Zyon McCollum Takeaways

Ahead of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers preseason game this Saturday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, they have two days of joint practices before they square off.

The joint practices allow us to see healthy matchups with starters, and it can often get competitive on the field showing where each team has strengths and weaknesses.

Here are a couple of things to take away from Wednesday's practice:

    CB Zyon McCollum

Yesterday we did a piece about the matchup between Bucs cornerback Zyon McCollum and Jags receiver Brian Thomas Jr . and how it would go a long way in showing if McCollum can hold his own. Well, the Jags rookie receiver dominated in practice when he caught a touchdown in 7-on-7 drills from Jags quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Shortly after, QB Mac Jones got some work in and found receiver Parker Washington for another touchdown with McCollum in coverage. It would be good to see McCollum get a large body of work in this week's preseason game versus the Jags.

    QB Baker Mayfield

There have been some good reports from this joint practice, and it's because of the Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield lighting up the Jags' secondary. It's no surprise that Mayfield had easy pickings against the Jags secondary as it is one of the weak spots of their defense, and Mayfield performed well against them last year. The Bucs quarterback didn't see too many practice snaps, but in the 7-on-7 drills, he found his favorite target in receiver Mike Evans for a touchdown.

Head Coach Todd Bowles chimed in at the end of practice and said the offense needs to play with higher energy, and while he hasn't said anything about the defense, I can't imagine it will be good.
