New York has really struggled recently. They finally broke out today.

Mark Vientos started the party in the second inning with a rocket down the line for an RBI double. Francisco Lindor followed up with a solo shot in the third. Pete Alonso then hit a home run in the fourth, giving the Mets a run in three straight innings.

That was enough for David Peterson. He was brilliant tonight. It was another excellent start for Peterson, who brought his ERA down to 3.04. The lefthander pitched 6.1 innings and only allowed three hits. He did walk four batters, but it felt like whenever Peterson needed to attack a batter, he did.

Peterson was taken out with one on and one out in the seventh. Huascar Brazobán faced one batter and got two outs. Brazobán got Max Schuemann to ground into a double play and close out the seventh.

New York broke the game open in the bottom of the seventh. The Mets benefitted from three walks to lead off the inning. Lindor, Brandon Nimmo, J.D. Martinez and Alonso all got at least one RBI in the inning.

Alonso had a big day, with his 26th homer of the year in his first four hit game. Alonso looked very comfortable at the plate today. He put excellent swings on the ball regardless of the count. The first baseman smoked all four of his hits. Alonso did a great job of sitting back on backing balls and hitting with runners in scoring position, two things that he has really struggled with recently.

Alonso looked very locked in at the plate today. It would be great if this was a sign of things to come.

The Mets have struggled with RISP recently. Hitting with RISP was such a strength for them when they were soaring. Today they were 6-11 with RISP.

It was a big win for the Mets. They need to do it again tomorrow when they play the rubber game of the A’s series at 1:10.
