Roman Harper Blasts SEC Superstar After Preseason All-American Selection

SEC Network analyst Roman Harper is a harsh critic when it comes to the preseason All-American teams and singled out one player who he didn't believe deserved to make the list.

Preseason All-American teams are typically about potential, right? Potential plus prior production. You're aiming to guess who the best players in the country will be, typically based on those two measures. So that's why LSU's Harold Perkins made the cut, which Harper vehemently disagreed with.

Sure, he knows Perkins has been solid, but Harper doesn't believe his level of play warrants All-American consideration yet.

“Harold Perkins, he’s been really good at LSU,” Harper said Monday . “I don’t think he should be a preseason All-American."

His case rests on the math.

"If we keep stats, numbers for a reason — he didn’t have a great year, last year," Harper asserted. "If you want to pick All-American based on potential, then why you keeping the stats and the numbers?"

Overall, Harper just doesn't think potential should be such a determining factor in preseason All-American lists.

“And if we want to say that, then let’s say that, but let’s call a spade a spade," he continued. "This man has the opportunity to be a postseason All-American, but preseason, he should not be there.”

Perkins totaled just over 70 tackles in each of his first two seasons with LSU, recording 5.5 sacks in 2023 and 13.0 total since his Tiger career began. He also added an interception and five pass deflections last fall. But regardless, not figures strong enough to impress Roman Harper.
