The St. Louis Cardinals season continues to not go as planned as they are handed another piece of injury news that will sideline their starting catcher for some time.

It was announced on Sunday that the Cardinals have placed catcher Willson Contreras on the 10-day injured list due to a fractured right middle finger. Contreras received the injury after he was hit by a pitch in the top of the fourth inning.

This will be the second time that Contreas will miss time for the Cardinals this season as he was out from May 8th to June 24th with a left arm fracture. This season the Cardinals catcher has hit .262/.380/.468 with 15 home runs and 36 RBIs.

After the 6-0 shut out loss on Saturday against the Minnesota Twins, the Cardinals manager Oli Marmol discussed what the loss of Contreras will mean for the team.

"We took a blow today. He fractured his middle finger on his right hand and he'll be out. I don't have a timeline but he will go on the IL. ... It's been a tough year. He's been beat up quite a bit. He's fought through a lot of it."

The Cardinals will call Ivan Herrera back up to the Majors to replace Contreras. He will join Pedro Pages as the two catchers for the big league club. Herrera has played 23 games in Triple-A Memphis this season and has hit .280/.402/.472 in his time with the Redbirds. He had a .718 OPS with three home runs and 19 RBIs across 54 games earlier in the year with St. Louis.

The Cardinals will look to steal the series away from the Minnesota Twins on Sunday in a rubber match at Target Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:10 PM EST.
