The Phoenix Mercury are back in the loss column after suffering an 84-70 defeat at the hands of the New York Liberty at home on Monday night. Following the Mercury’s 15th loss of the 2024 WNBA season, Phoenix center Brittney Griner and guard Natasha Cloud voiced out their frustration over the officiating in the contest.

While the Liberty got 16 attempts from the foul line, the Mercury were only able to take four shots from the charity stripe. That’s the fewest in a game for the franchise since 2002.

“It’s because the games are not being called equally on both ends of the floor,” Cloud uttered following the game, per Trevor Booth of Desert Wave Media . “So we’re having to advocate every single night, we’re having to fight every single night.”

“We got to be professional,” Griner chimed in. “People aren’t perfect, and you’re going to boil over. But we also know that you can’t give them more things to call against us and put them on the line. As much as it stings and it hurts, we have to lock in.”

Griner has been around the league long enough to know that such discrepancies in fouls between teams in a game happen from time to time. At the end of the day, she knows that players can only worry about what they can control – like ball security.

Although Griner mustered 22 points and six rebounds while shooting 11-for-16 from the floor, she repeatedly shot her team in the foot with seven turnovers. Overall, the Mercury coughed the ball up 20 times.

The 16-15 Phoenix will look to turn things around as soon as this Wednesday when the Mercury host the Minnesota Lynx.
