Michigan football kicked off its season with a solid 30-10 victory over Fresno State, showcasing both standout performances and areas needing improvement. Here are three winners and three losers from Saturday's game, as noted by Tony Garcia of the Detroit Free Press.

    Winners

    Colston Loveland, Tight End

Loveland was a standout on offense, leading the team with eight receptions for 87 yards and a touchdown. His ability to gain yards after the catch was impressive, with 41 of those yards coming after contact. He consistently moved the chains and capped off his performance with a crucial touchdown in the fourth quarter, solidifying his role as a key player for the Wolverines.

    Josaiah Stewart, Edge Rusher

Stewart emerged as a defensive force, earning the highest rating among Michigan defenders. He recorded five tackles, including two sacks and three tackles for loss. His presence was felt throughout the game, contributing significantly to the team's defensive efforts and helping to stifle Fresno State's offense.

    Kalel Mullings, Running Back

Mullings had a slow start but found his rhythm in the second half, finishing with 92 rushing yards on 15 carries. His ability to break off significant runs helped the Wolverines maintain momentum, particularly during a critical touchdown drive. He also contributed on special teams with three kick returns for 74 yards, showcasing his versatility.

    Losers

    Donovan Edwards, Running Back

Edwards struggled to make an impact in the season opener. He finished with just 27 rushing yards on 11 carries and was unable to find any rhythm. Despite being a focal point of the offense, he was largely ineffective, with most of his touches resulting in minimal gains.

    Evan Link, Right Tackle

In his first collegiate game, Link faced challenges on the offensive line. He allowed three pressures and struggled to protect the quarterback effectively. His performance highlighted the need for improvement across the offensive line, which struggled to establish a consistent running game.

    Wide Receivers

The receiving corps had a disappointing outing, combining for only six catches and 34 yards. The lack of production from key players like Tyler Morris and Semaj Morgan put additional pressure on the offense. The unit will need to step up in upcoming games to provide more support for the quarterback.
