As the Washington Commanders gear up for their Week 1 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers , the team faces uncertainty surrounding rookie defensive tackle Jer’Zhan “Johnny” Newton.

Newton was listed as a limited participant on the injury report Wednesday, dealing with lingering issues from a foot injury that has affected him throughout training camp .

The former Illinois standout, selected 36th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, has been working his way back from a Jones fracture in his left foot and additional soft tissue problems. Head coach Dan Quinn provided an update on Newton’s status, stating that the rookie would participate in a limited capacity in Thursday’s practice after a full session on Wednesday and will practice again on Friday.

"He'll go work today, then we'll go limited tomorrow work again Friday, then I'll have a better assessment," Quinn explained .

The Commanders hope to have a clearer picture of Newton’s readiness following Friday’s practice. If cleared to play, Newton is expected to serve as a backup to veterans Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen, providing depth on the defensive line.

Newton’s injury status is significant for a Commanders team eager to improve upon last season’s defensive performance. The team has high hopes for Newton, whose college career included 52 tackles and 7.5 sacks in his final season at Illinois, to contribute as part of a rotation that spells Allen and Payne. His ability to adapt quickly to the NFL level could be crucial in helping Washington establish a dominant defensive front.

However, with Newton’s injury lingering, the Commanders must prepare for the possibility of starting the season without him. The rookie's recovery remains a focal point heading into Sunday’s game , and his condition will be closely monitored in the coming days. His status as a limited participant raises concerns about his immediate availability, but the Commanders remain optimistic about his long-term impact on the team's defensive scheme.
