Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Alex Highsmith has been named the NFLPA Week 1 Community MVP, celebrating his impactful contributions both on and off the field. Highsmith's recognition comes just days before the Steelers face the Atlanta Falcons in their season opener on September 8th , adding to the excitement surrounding his continued efforts to make a difference in the community.
Highsmith was honored following his third annual "Back to School Bash," an event that provided essential supplies and support to over 300 students in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, on August 19. Organized through the Alex Highsmith Family Foundation, the event distributed backpacks filled with school supplies, books, healthy meals, and water bottles.
Highsmith also arranged free haircuts and activities, creating a comprehensive support experience for families as they prepared for the new school year.
“It is a true honor to be named the Week 1 NFLPA Community MVP. I know that God has blessed me with this platform to be a blessing to others and that is the driving force behind the work I do in the community,” the Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker said.
In recognition of his work, the NFLPA is donating $10,000 to Highsmith's foundation or a charity of his choice. He is also set to visit a local school or children's hospital, and his name is now in contention for the Alan Page Community Award, the highest honor the NFLPA can bestow upon a player.
Highsmith's community efforts extend beyond Pittsburgh. In his hometown of Wilmington, North Carolina, he hosts an annual youth football camp and has awarded over $20,000 in scholarships to local high school seniors. The city recognized his ongoing contributions by naming April 6 "Alex Highsmith Day."
With the Steelers set to kick off their season against the Falcons , Highsmith’s dedication to both his team and community continues to be a source of inspiration, embodying the spirit of the NFLPA Community MVP program. This initiative collaborates with organizations like Young Minds Inspired and Big Brothers Big Sisters of America to bring educational opportunities and mentorship to communities nationwide.
