American sprinter Noah Lyles had a successful showing at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Winning a gold medal in the Men's 100-meter, Lyles took home bronze for the Men's 200-meter.

Well-known for his track and field career, Lyles is perhaps even more famous for his viral "World Champion" comments last year.

"You know the thing that hurts me the most, is that I have to watch the NBA Finals and they have 'world champion' on their head," Lyles said in August, 2023. "World champion of what? The United States? Don't get me wrong, I love the U.S. at times, but that ain't the world."

Lyles faced a lot of backlash for these comments, particularly from NBA players and fans. The topic became a debate again at the Paris Olympics when USA Basketball won gold, as the roster full of NBA stars dominated the rest of the tournament.

In attendance at the US Open Tennis Championships, Lyles was asked if the tennis players are World Champions.

"[Tennis players] are World Champions," Lyles said via ESPN. "International players that play against the top in the world constantly."

Lyles' comments went viral, tallying over 50,000 likes in one hour, and many sports fans had the same reaction to what he had to say.
