Texas WR Matthew Golden scores 2 first-half TDs in debut: Meet the new Longhorn

Matthew Golden is having a big debut for Texas football against Colorado State .

The transfer wideout from Houston has scored his second touchdown of Saturday's game vs. the Rams . Both scoring receptions came inside the red zone to extend the Longhorn lead.

The first came on an out-breaking route.

Then, with time dwindling in the first half, Ewers found Golden over the middle for another score.

Three catches for 50 yards in one half is an easy way to make friends in Longhorn nation, especially if two go for touchdowns.

Golden has racked up over 1,000 receiving yards

Golden had a productive two seasons with the Cougars. The 6-foot, 195-pounder had 36 catches for 567 yards for seven touchdowns in 2022 before following that up with 38 catches for 404 yards and six scores.

He also had two kick return touchdowns his sophomore year.

He knows the end zone at DKR well

Today wasn't his first touchdown at Royal-Memorial Stadium. Golden scored twice while catching seven passes for 88 yards vs. Texas last year.

That might have been the reason the Longhorns pursued the Houston native.

Golden, a former Klein Cain star, is used to big debuts

Golden likes to start things out on the right foot. He set the record for touchdown receptions at Klein Cain High School in his first appearance on the varsity squad. Then there was his final game in high school, which included a performance for the ages, according to papercitymag.com.

Golden caught two touchdown passes, ran for another touchdown and even completed a pass on a trick play.

"In a 56-53 loss to Spring High School in the state playoffs where UH’s freshman sensation almost single handedly willed a school that only opened its doors in 2017 to the brink of a major win. After that stellar high school career, Golden, then a four-star recruit, became one of the highest-ranked commits in Cougars history.
