    Student arrested for bringing gun to West Phoenix High School, faces weapons charges

    A student at a Phoenix high school brought a gun to campus on Tuesday, according to an email from Phoenix police spokesperson Sgt. Rob Scherer.

    Staff at West Phoenix High School, near 39th Avenue and Thomas Road, brought the student into the administration office and learned that the student had a firearm, Scherer said in an email.

    The unloaded gun was found in the student's backpack, according to a statement released by the school.

    "The safety and well being of our students is always our highest priority. We are thankful our safety procedures worked as they were designed to and that our students remained safe throughout this situation," the statement read.

    The student was arrested after officers arrived at the school at noon and no one was injured, Scherer said.

    The student’s age, name and gender were not released.

    “The student was arrested and will ultimately be booked on weapons charges,” Scherer said.

    An investigation by The Arizona Republic found that there is an increasing prevalence of gun threats at schools .

    From 2019 to 2022, there were at least 96 times that weapons were found in students’ possession.
