Opinion | The history of Hoffman House lives on in my memory
I've had a beer stein or two — even a couple of boots — at Madison's Essen Haus, one of the few authentic German restaurants in Madison. But when the City Council last week gave the OK to the developer who wants to replace it with an apartment building and hotel in the 500 block of East Wilson Street, it wasn't the demise of this fine purveyor of everything from great schnitzels to German sausages that set my nostalgic juices flowing.

Boys & Girls Club, Jackson Yard Care team up for landscaping camp
While summer is usually a time for students to decompress, a group of local Madison high schoolers got to work, setting out to learn the ins and outs of landscaping. Four Madison high schoolers with the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County (BGCDC) spent a week learning from Action Jackson, CEO of Jackson’s Yard Care, 922 S Bird St., Sun Prairie. The students made rounds in a miniature version of Jackson’s Yard Care workforce development program where they received hands-on training with tools, safety, behind the scenes aspects and what it takes to work in landscaping. The weeklong training is a component of the BGCDC’s youth workforce development programs in trades and Jackson’s push to provide high quality instruction in landscaping.

Mike Campbell & the Dirty Knobs, Monday, July 1, Barrymore , 8 p.m.: At first listen, you might mistake “Dare to Dream,” the new single by Mike Campbell & the Dirty Knobs, as a lost Tom Petty track. If recent setlists are any indication, he’ll also sneak in some Petty classics. Roots singer-songwriter Shannon McNally opens. Tickets at ticketmaster.com.
