BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Veterans for Peace held a memorial service honoring one of their former members by planting a tree in his name.

The family and friends of Phil Stanton gathered yesterday to celebrate his life and memorialize his devotion to serving others.

A tree was planted inside the clover leaf off ramp from Route 363 in downtown Binghamton.

Stanton served in the Navy during the Vietnam War and later worked at the Broome County Department of Social Services. He was recognized by State Senator Lea Webb for his contributions to the Methodist Federation for Social Action, Reconciling Ministries Network, Veterans for Peace, and his help founding the Northside Neighborhood Assembly.

Stanton died last November at the age of 81.

This is the 11th tree that the Veterans of Peace has planted for departed members, to honor their commitment to peace, justice, and civic engagement.
