    84-year-old in wheelchair struck by vehicle in Birmingham dies

    BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — A pedestrian in a wheelchair who was struck by a vehicle last month has died from his injuries.

    According to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, 84-year-old Erwin Ellis Curtis, who was in a wheelchair, was struck by a vehicle while crossing the road on Messer Airport Highway at Georgia Road the morning of June 16. Curtis was taken to UAB Hospital for treatment where he ultimately died from his injuries on July 5.

    The person who struck Curtis did not stay on scene and Birmingham Police Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.

    Anyone with information regarding the hit-and-run is asked to contact Birmingham police.
