Bloomington PD: Mother has son kick in apt. door, beat victim with tire iron

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — A Bedford man and his mother are accused of kicking in a Bloomington man’s door and beating him with a tire iron.

Phillip Dean Magness Jr., 38, of Bedford and Jamie Jo Staten, 56, of Farmersburg are charged with burglary with a deadly weapon, a Level 2 felony, in addition to battery with a deadly weapon and criminal mischief.

According to court documents, Bloomington police were called out to the apartment complex on July 12 at roughly 9:20 a.m. on report of an assault. Police said the victim’s face was swollen and bruised. Blood was located around the apartment.

Police said the victim ended up telling officers that Staten had been staying at his apartment but returned around midnight with her son, Magness.

The victim said it was Magness who kicked in the door and struck him in the face with a tire iron.

Bloomington police ended up reviewing security camera footage that showed Staten and Magness walking up to the front door of the apartment. Staten is seen carrying a tire iron.

Police said Magness kicked the door several times before the pair made entry into the apartment. Magness reportedly flees shortly afterward with Staten not leaving until officers arrive.

If convicted, the pair face up to 30 years in prison on a Level 2 felony.
