The Fascinating, Powerful Music Of Lucinda Williams: Bozeman, July 9
Few musicians are as well respected among their peers as Lucinda Williams. This Grammy winning song-writing powerhouse is returning to Montana this month for a Bozeman tour date on July 9th. "Lucinda Williams, hailed as one of the most gifted storytellers in contemporary Americana music, has captivated audiences around the...
Bar Beat: The Crystal Bar
On a nice summer stroll through downtown Bozeman, the overhead neon sign of The Crystal Bar glows, catching the eye of passersby day and night. The bright red haze bounces off the brick wall as music flows out onto the street. Three more neon signs sit in the window, including another Crystal Bar logo, this one with the Budweiser symbol attached (a gift from Anheuser Busch to celebrate the large amount of its beer served). On the sidewalk out front stands a hand drawn A-frame chalk sign, informing guests of the summertime rooftop schedule and specials: Rooftop Garden open daily at 4pm; a bucket of beers, 5 for $15.
Sweeten to Taste: Ice Cream in Bozeman History
As a kid, one of my favorite summertime activities was helping my parents make homemade ice cream on the Fourth of July. We had a bright blue slatted wooden bucket with a hand crank and interior metal canister with wooden paddles. After filling the canister with a custard-like concoction made from heavy cream, eggs, sugar, and vanilla, we packed ice cubes and special ice cream salt all around the canister. Then came the fun part. We sat on a stool in front of the ice cream maker in our driveway and cranked, and cranked, and cranked that handle – turning the canister around and around in the ice. As the ice slowly melted, we added more to the top, making sure the bucket was filled and the canister surrounded. My siblings and I took turns cranking to give our arms a rest, but the process always took an eternity. Eventually, our parents gave us the happy news that the ice cream was ready. I remember opening that frosty metal canister and scraping the ice cream into bowls, which we would quickly consume in the July heat.
July Cover Artist: Mitch Sander
Originally from Bismarck, ND, artist Mitch Sander moved to Bozeman in 2010 to play in the mountains and begin his art journey. He always enjoyed art, and doodled on school work, but never looked at it as a serious career path. As a self-taught artist, Mitch began to paint on canvas and display his work at local events, coffee shops, and breweries. After painting for some time, he also picked up wire wrapping and wood burning. A few years later, he learned to use spray paint and has a few murals in the area, one being Neptune’s Eatery in Livingston, in collaboration with Griffin Foster.
Hyalite: 50 Years in the Mountains
Driving to the end of the road and walking off into the mountains is a wonderful thing. I have been doing it for a long time. There is such a sense of freedom, and something else—a bit of daring, as if it might not be quite legal. I mean, there is no charge, it does not cost anything. There are rules, but they are basic; be careful, don’t be stupid, don’t make a mess; if you make a mess, clean it up. Things we learned before we went to school. All that vastness. Free for the experience. Unbelievable. So the first steps are a bit stealthy before the wild thoughts take over.
Top 10 Bozeman Trail Runs
Ultra-runner and author Donald Buraglio once said, “The benefits and opportunities of running are available to anyone. You don’t have to be born a natural athlete and you don’t have to be uniquely gifted. A life-shaping experience is there for the taking, waiting right outside your door.” For most people, running can be an intimidating sport to get into. It can often feel as though everyone who runs is, as Buraglio says, a natural athlete who never seems to deal with the normal battles of training, like leg pains, cramps, and tiredness. But I have come to realize over time that the beauty of running is found in these struggles and that, truly, anyone can be a runner. There is no requirement of being uniquely gifted, you just must go out there and try it.
