BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — A Birmingham high school was placed on lockdown because of criminal activity in its area Wednesday morning.

According to Birmingham Police Department Sgt. LaQuitta Wade, an officer just after 8 a.m. tried to make a traffic stop on a stolen vehicle. The driver kept driving and ignored several stop signs.

Wade stated the driver lost control of the vehicle, which crashed into a pole near Jackson-Olin High School. All vehicle occupants fled on foot, according to Wade. The high school was then placed on lockdown.

None of the suspects were found inside the school. Wade noted police detained two juveniles, so BPD detectives could question them.
