Alabama football 2024 practice news: Camp storylines, depth chart predictions by veteran Crimson Tide experts

Alabama football will begin the 2024 season with its lowest coaches poll ranking since 2009 after being picked No. 5, ending a streak of 14 consecutive seasons inside the top three. The Crimson Tide are entering their first season under head coach Kalen DeBoer, who was hired following Nick Saban's retirement. DeBoer's first Alabama football fall camp is well underway, as he tries to solidify the Alabama football depth chart. Several position groups were decimated by the usual attrition of players completing their eligibility or leaving school for the NFL, while the transfer portal swiped other important players.
The team of insiders at Bama247 are providing on-the-ground updates on every development in fall camp, including insights from Matt Zenitz, John Talty and Mike Rodak, who have more than 25 years of experience covering the Crimson Tide. The trio has deep-rooted ties inside and around the Alabama community, and Talty wrote The Leadership Secrets of Nick Saban, a Wall Street Journal and Publishers Weekly bestseller.
Alabama graduated its top two leading rushers from last season but returns a trio of running backs with experience for the Crimson Tide last season. Sophomore Justin Haynes led Alabama in yards per carry (6.7) last season, making the most of his 25 carries. He earned the team's trust in the biggest games as well, rushing for 31 yards on four carries (7.8 yards per rush) against Michigan in the College Football Playoffs while gaining at least eight yards on three of the four carries. He was a four-star running back and the No. 3 player at his position out of high school, per 247Sports, and has the potential to become a highlight reel running back this season.
Haynes will have competition from junior Jam Miller, who rushed for 201 yards on 41 carries last season and Richard Young, who was the No. 7 running back in the Class of 2023 with Haynes. Along with four-star freshmen Daniel Hill and Kevin Riley, what Alabama lacks in backfield experience it more than makes up for in potential. DeBoer had his top two running backs split carries in his first season at Washington but last year's starter took 70.1% of the running back carries, so keep an eye on whoever gets the early opportunities as they'll have a chance to earn a bell-cow role. Another one of the Alabama football headlines surrounds the Crimson Tide's linebackers. Alabama should have two of the best inside linebackers in the SEC this season, as Deontae Lawson and Jihaad Campbell are back after playing key roles last year. Lawson started all 11 games he played, while Campbell made eight starts and appeared in 13 contests.
There is not much experience on the depth chart behind those players, so the Crimson Tide will hope they can stay healthy. As for the outside linebackers, there is not an established starter for the Wolf position in defensive coordinator Kane Wommack's scheme. Quandarrius Robinson, Keanu Koht, Qua Russaw and Yhonzae Pierre are all contenders, which is something that the Bama247 team is keeping a close eye on during fall camp.
