Brianna Dunlap described how her brother suffered from a long history of mental health situations and was on medication for years until his mother passed away in 2022.
She explained that he’s been off his medication, which led to him allegedly killing their adopted father.
“I saw guilt, I saw pain, I saw anger. I didn’t see a lot of victory,” Brianna Dunlap said about her brother’s eyes as he faced a Mecklenburg County judge Friday morning, just 24 hours after he was arrested for the alleged murder.
“I believe if he had time to think about his actions, he would’ve,” Brianna continued.
Fred Dunlap was last seen alive on Friday, July 19, inside his home along Bobby Lane.
It was the same day an in-home therapist visited him and his live-in-adoptive son, Desmondd Dunlap, during a session. Queen City News was told that Desmond lived in a teal and white shed at the end of the driveway of the Bobby Lane home.
In court, prosecutors said that Dunlap admitted to authorities that he and his father got into an argument after the nurse left. The 21-year-old said that when the situation calmed down, he grabbed a knife from the kitchen and stabbed his father in the neck.
He later hid the knife in the shed and then allegedly tried to use his father’s debit card twice the following days.
On Wednesday, CMPD found Fred Dunlap’s body while conducting a search warrant at this house.
“I don’t believe monsters are born, I believe monsters are grown,” Brianna said. “I can say his mental health state is in the midst of a decision, right or wrong, was not cared for.”
She is asking for a mental competency hearing for Desmond, saying her brother has been off his medication for years.
Neighbors say that Fred Dunlap was an ideal person to live next to. However, Brianna explained, her brother and their adoptive father had a tumultuous relationship.
“He was grown into this hurt and traumatized. He was beaten and battered.”
Which is why, she’s asking for the courts to give her brother help for his mental demons, not hold him behind bars. “Please give my brother that chance to make his wrong a right.”
Fred Dunlap’s sister was also inside today’s court hearings and broke down the moment Dunlap was physically brought inside the courtroom
Dunlap’s being held on a $1 million bond. His next court date is in August.
Queen City News is working to learn if and when he will be given a mental competency hearing.
The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. Anyone with further information is asked to call Charlotte Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
