A big-rig hauling used cooking oil crashed Wednesday on Interstate 5 south of Corning spilling used cooking oil across both northbound lanes of the freeway.

California Highway Patrol reported James Musso, 24, of Anderson was driving the 2015 Kenmore north on the freeway in the slow lane south of Liberal Avenue, when around 1:48 p.m. he attempted to change lanes and lost control of the semi.

CHP Officer Parker said the traffic was heavy and as he changed lanes he went onto the west shoulder of the freeway and overcorrected causing the vehicle to roll lengthways.

The Kenmore came to rest on its side across the fast lane its underbelly facing south.

The crash caused the big-rig's tanker to spill its load of used cooking oil across both lanes of the roadway, Parker said.

Northbound traffic was diverted to the east shoulder of the freeway around the spill.

Musso, who was able to get himself out of the wreckage previous to first responders' arrival, suffered lacerations to his face and was transported by ground ambulance to Enloe Medical Center in Chico for treatment.

Parker said CalTrans responded to clean up the spilled oil and both lanes of northbound I-5 reopened around 5:25 p.m.

It does not appear any other vehicles were involved in the accident.
