Big Lots, the American discount retailer, plans to close up to 50 stores in California, according to the Desert Sun.

There are 109 Big Lots stores in California, the second state after Texas, which has 119.

Big Lots is planning to close up to 50 stores in California but to open three new ones.

Reasons for Big Lots store closures

The closings are because of the decline in sales amid price rises.

Between the first quarters of 2023 and 2024, sales dropped by 10.2%, with Big Lots reporting a net loss of $114.5 million.

The company is facing "substantial doubt" about managing to escape a potential bankruptcy filing.
