Zephyrhills (Fla.) Five-Star Plus+ cornerback DJ Pickett is down to three schools, with a commitment date set for July 17. After initially eyeing an October commitment date, in less than two weeks, Pickett will be choosing between Oregon, LSU, and Miami.

Ahead of the decision, CaneSport caught up with Pickett’s father, Damien Pickett Sr., who talked about his son’s upcoming commitment and the Hurricanes .

“At the end of the day, at those schools, nobody is leaving,” Pickett Sr. told CaneSport. “(Mario) Cristobal is not leaving Miami; Kirby Smart is not going nowhere; Brian Kelly isn’t going anywhere; and Dan Lanning isn’t going anywhere. There’s nothing that those four schools could show us that they haven’t shown us already. Why keep this going on? He (DJ) knows what he wants to do. He put God first, prayed about it, and continued to pray about it. He’s at peace with his decision, and as long as he’s at peace, I’m good.”

Throughout June, DJ had the chance to visit all of his top three schools on official visits, which played a vital role in his decisions. Ahead of the OV to Coral Gables in June, Damien explained that he wanted to see the Canes’ plans for DJ, and they saw just that.

“Miami had a plan for him, and they want him to play corner,” Pickett Sr. said. “They want him to play cornerback for them, be physical at the point of attack, and compete early for a spot.”

The 6-foot-4 defensive back is the No. 6 overall prospect and No. 2 corner in the 2025 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking , a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He’s also the top-ranked player in Florida.

“My son is a corner by trade,” Pickett Sr. said. “That’s what he wants to play in college. He is going to work his behind off to become a better corner and to be the top corner. This is the first time since eighth grade that he’s going into the season slated as a corner. We’re excited about it, and he wants to play corner in college.”

Following DJ’s July 17 decision, Damien explained that things would most likely be shut down with his recruitment. The family is hoping to create a stronger bond with the program throughout the fall.

“We want to be the type of family that, whichever school he picks on the 17th, if you see us anywhere, it will be at the particular school’s game,” Pickett Sr. said. “Whether that’s on the road or at that school. I would hope that he’s not still entertaining other schools after July 17th.”

    CaneSport’s take

With Pickett moving up his commitment to July from October, we’re not sure this benefits the Hurricanes’ chances of landing the five-star prospect. Prior to the commitment date change, Pickett stated that he wanted to see Miami’s in-season play before making a decision, but that is no longer the plan with a July commitment set.
