HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – Eyewitness News speaks with an Evansville woman who was arrested on charges of neglect, after authorities say she did not take her one-month-old child to the hospital for treatment of second degree burns.

According to police records, Mary Neighbors, 23, dropped her son, Cameron Neighbors, off at a relative’s house on June 7 to go camping in Boonville over the weekend. Authorities say Mary picked up Cameron on June 9, and on June 10 she messaged the relative who had been watching him why there was a mark on his elbow.

Neighbors reportedly told DCS that she had taken the victim to a doctor’s appointment on June 11, but DCS determined that was a lie after contacting the doctor’s office directly. When asked why she did not report the injury to DCS, Neighbors told police she thought they would take the victim away from her.

Neighbors was charged with neglect of a dependent, and released on a $500 bond.

After being released, Eyewitness News got to speak with Neighbors and her family about the events that took place.

According to Neighbors, she admits she lied to DCS about the doctor’s appointment because she was scared to have Cameron taken from her. She claims she would never hurt her own child.
