There were a few different changes in the SEC this offseason when it comes to players moving teams - big-named players at that, too. For the Arkansas Razorbacks , they lost a guy who is looked at and compared to a generational talent in Cam Newton. They lost quarterback KJ Jefferson, who is now playing for UCF.
Jefferson is one of the most talented quarterbacks to ever play for the Razorbacks and put up some impressive numbers during his time there. He had a total of 7,923 yards, 67 touchdowns, and 18 interceptions in five seasons with the Razorbacks, which is pretty good, and he even holds a few school records under his belt as well.
However, he felt it was time for a change, and that's okay. With that change, Bobby Petrino, the Razorbacks offensive coordinator, went and grabbed a player who has a similar skillset through the transfer portal. In 2024, we can assume that the Razorbacks will trot Taylen Green out there as the starter, who played at Boise State last season.
Green has a lot of great qualities about him, including his ability to lead a team - what every quarterback needs to be able to do.
"The feel of our football team is as good as it's been since I've been there. I love the fact that we've got a quarterback who is a leader and can do it on the field as well. [Green] has got a personality," Pittman said at SEC Media Days. He says what he’s thinking but not too much — if you know what I mean. I think he might have a little advantage over all of the guys because he [started at Boise State]. It may come a little bit more natural right now for him than everybody else, at this point.”
This comes off as a slight towards Jefferson, maybe as if Pittman is saying that it feels good to finally have a QB who's a great leader as if Jefferson wasn't during his tenure. Maybe Pittman is not saying that, but it certainly looks and sounds that way.
And, what do we know? We are not in the huddle, we are not in the locker room, and we are not in meetings with the team. Maybe there are things that Jefferson did to be a bad leader in all of those areas that Pittman just didn't like. It certainly sounds like he has found a QB he trusts, though.
