A 22-year-old man was sentenced to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to a shooting in 2022 over a dispute about cellphones, according to the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office.

Jacob Yi was arrested in February 2022 on charges of murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm by a felon.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Yi shot and killed 31-year-old Tyshawn James Groves , of Haslet, after Groves asked Yi to buy iPhones for him at an AT&T store on South Cooper Street.

Groves promised to pay Yi for his part in purchasing them, according to the warrant.

After buying the phones and being paid by Groves, Yi attempted to leave with the phones and Groves’ debit card, according to Arlington police. When Groves confronted him, Yi shot him multiple times, killing him.

A 29-year-old man with the victim also was shot and hid behind a pillar after being fired upon. He was taken to a hospital with serious injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening, police said.

Police did not say why Groves was offering to pay Yi to buy the iPhones for him.
